What is Equivalent Units Calculation?

Equivalent units measure how much work was really done in a period when some units are only partially finished at period-end. They convert partly-completed work-in-process into the equivalent number of fully completed units, so process costing can divide total costs fairly.

Short answer

Under the weighted-average method, equivalent units equal the units completed and transferred out plus the ending work-in-process units multiplied by their percentage of completion.

Steps to Calculate Equivalent Units
  1. 1
    Count units completed & transferred out
    These units are 100% complete for this department.
  2. 2
    Identify ending work-in-process units
    Units still in the department at period-end.
  3. 3
    Estimate their percentage of completion
    How far along the ending WIP units are, e.g. 40%.
  4. 4
    Add completed units + equivalent WIP units
    EU = Completed + (Ending WIP × % Complete).

Step-by-step worked examples

A department completes and transfers out 8,000 units. Ending WIP is 2,000 units, 50% complete. Find equivalent units.

EU = Completed + (Ending WIP × % Complete)
EU = 8,000 + (2,000 × 0.50)
EU = 8,000 + 1,000 = 9,000 equivalent units

12,000 units are completed and transferred out. Ending WIP of 3,000 units is 25% complete. Find equivalent units.

EU = 12,000 + (3,000 × 0.25)
EU = 12,000 + 750 = 12,750 equivalent units

A department finishes 5,000 units with no ending WIP this period. What are the equivalent units?

EU = Completed + (Ending WIP × % Complete)
EU = 5,000 + (0 × 0%)
EU = 5,000 equivalent units

Quick quiz

Q1.Equivalent units are used to...

Correct answer: B. They express partial work as an equivalent number of complete units.

Q2.Completed units = 10,000; ending WIP = 4,000 units at 25% complete. Equivalent units?

Correct answer: B. 10,000 + (4,000 × 0.25) = 11,000.

Q3.If ending WIP is 0 units, equivalent units equal...

Correct answer: B. With no ending WIP, EU = completed units only.

Q4.Under the weighted-average method, beginning WIP is...

Correct answer: A. Weighted-average blends beginning WIP work with current period work, so it isn't separately added in this formula.

Common mistakes

Counting ending WIP units as fully completed.Correct: Multiply ending WIP units by their percentage of completion first.

Forgetting to add completed units to the WIP equivalent units.Correct: Total EU = completed units + equivalent units in ending WIP.

Using 100% completion for all ending WIP units.Correct: Use the actual estimated completion percentage, which is often below 100%.

Confusing physical units with equivalent units.Correct: Physical units count every unit regardless of completion; equivalent units adjust for partial work.

FAQ

What is equivalent units calculation?

It's the method of converting partially completed units of work-in-process into the equivalent number of fully finished units for costing purposes.

What is the equivalent units formula?

EU = Units completed and transferred out + (Ending WIP units × % complete).

What are examples of equivalent units?

2,000 units that are 50% complete count as 1,000 equivalent units of work.

How do you calculate equivalent units under weighted-average?

Add units fully completed and transferred out to the ending WIP units multiplied by their percentage of completion.
