What Is the Human Nervous System?

The nervous system is your body's communication network, sending and processing signals between your brain, spinal cord, and all other body parts. It controls everything from conscious actions to automatic reflexes.

Short answer

The nervous system consists of the central nervous system (brain & spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system (nerves). It transmits electrical and chemical signals to coordinate movement, sensation, and automatic functions.

Reflex Arc: How Your Body Responds
  1. 1
    Stimulus
    Receptors detect stimulus (e.g., heat)
  2. 2
    Sensory Neuron
    Signal sent to spinal cord
  3. 3
    Synapse
    Neurotransmitter crosses gap
  4. 4
    Motor Neuron
    Signal travels to muscle
  5. 5
    Response
Muscle contracts (e.g., pull hand away)

Step-by-step worked examples

You touch a hot stove. Explain the reflex arc.

Heat receptor detects temperature → sensory neuron sends signal → synapse relays to motor neuron → muscle contracts → hand withdraws (all within 50 ms, faster than conscious thought).

What is the difference between the somatic and autonomic nervous systems?

Somatic = voluntary control of skeletal muscles (movement). Autonomic = involuntary control of organ systems (heart rate, digestion, breathing) — divided into sympathetic ('fight/flight') and parasympathetic ('rest/digest').

Name the three parts of a neuron and their roles.

Dendrite (receives signals), cell body (processes signals), axon (transmits signal to next neuron). Together they form the functional unit for nerve impulses.

Quick quiz

Q1.Which part of the nervous system controls digestion and heart rate?

Correct answer: B. The autonomic nervous system automatically regulates organ functions like digestion and heart rate.

Q2.What transmits signals across a synapse?

Correct answer: B. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers released from the axon terminal.

Q3.In a reflex arc, which neuron connects the sensory and motor neurons?

Correct answer: C. Interneurons in the spinal cord bridge sensory and motor neurons in reflex arcs.

Q4.Which division of the autonomic nervous system promotes 'fight or flight'?

Correct answer: B. The sympathetic nervous system increases heart rate and prepares for danger.

Common mistakes

The nervous system only controls voluntary movement.Correct: It controls both voluntary (skeletal muscle) and involuntary (organs) functions.

All nerve signals go to the brain before a response.Correct: Reflex arcs bypass the brain for speed.

Neurons transmit signals using electrical current only.Correct: They use both electrical (action potentials) and chemical (neurotransmitters) signals.

The spinal cord is just a bundle of nerves.Correct: It processes information and controls reflexes independently of the brain.

FAQ

How fast do nerve signals travel?

Speeds range from ~1 m/s (slow unmyelinated) to 120 m/s (fast myelinated). The myelin sheath insulates the axon, speeding conduction.

What is a nerve impulse?

An electrical signal generated by ion movements across the neuron membrane, propagated along the axon.

How many neurons are in the human nervous system?

Approximately 86 billion neurons in the brain and spinal cord, plus billions more in the peripheral nervous system.

Can damaged neurons regenerate?

Central nervous system neurons rarely regenerate, but peripheral neurons can slowly regrow over weeks or months.
