What is Meiosis and Sexual Reproduction?

Meiosis is a specialized form of cell division that produces four genetically diverse haploid gametes (sperm or eggs) from one diploid parent cell. It enables sexual reproduction by ensuring offspring have genetic material from two parents.

Short answer

Meiosis is two consecutive divisions (Meiosis I and II) that reduce chromosome number by half and mix genetic material. This creates sperm and eggs with 23 chromosomes, ready to fuse at fertilization.

Stages of Meiosis
  1. 1
    Prophase I
Homologous chromosomes pair up (synapsis); crossing over exchanges genetic material.
  2. 2
    Metaphase I
Paired chromosomes align at cell equator.
  3. 3
    Anaphase I
Homologous pairs separate to opposite poles.
  4. 4
    Telophase I & Cytokinesis
Two haploid cells form; each has one chromosome from each pair.
  5. 5
    Meiosis II
Similar to mitosis: sister chromatids separate, producing 4 haploid cells (gametes).

Step-by-step worked examples

A human diploid cell has 46 chromosomes. After meiosis, how many are in each gamete?

Diploid (2n) = 46.
After meiosis: haploid (n) = 23.
Each sperm and egg has 23 chromosomes.

Why is crossing over important in meiosis?

Homologous chromosomes exchange segments in Prophase I.
This creates genetic variation — no two gametes are identical.
Essential for offspring diversity.

How many gametes result from one diploid cell?

One cell → 4 haploid gametes.
In males: 4 functional sperm.
In females: 1 functional egg + 3 polar bodies (in animals).

FAQ

What is meiosis in sexual reproduction?

A reduction division producing 4 haploid gametes (sperm or eggs) with half the parent's chromosomes.

How does meiosis differ from mitosis?

Mitosis produces 2 identical diploid cells; meiosis produces 4 different haploid cells. Meiosis includes crossing over.

Why is chromosome reduction important?

When gametes fuse (fertilization), the offspring has the correct chromosome number (46 in humans).

What is genetic variation in meiosis?

Crossing over and random assortment mix alleles, making each gamete unique.
