What are Personal Pronouns?

Personal pronouns replace nouns in sentences to avoid repetition. They have different forms depending on whether they are subjects (performing the action) or objects (receiving the action).

Personal pronouns replace nouns in sentences. French has subject pronouns (je, tu, il, elle, nous, vous, ils, elles) and object pronouns (me, te, le, la, lui, nous, vous, les, leur).

Step-by-step worked examples

Replace the noun: Pierre aime Marie. (using direct object pronoun)

Identify the object: Marie (direct object)
Replace with la (her): Pierre aime la.

Rewrite using pronouns: Nous donnons le livre à Anne.

Object = le livre → le; indirect object = à Anne → lui
Nous le lui donnons. (We give it to her.)

Fill the blank: Je ___ parle. (speak to them)

Pronoun for 'them' in indirect object = leur
Sentence: Je leur parle. (I speak to them.)
