When to Use 'kein' vs 'nicht'?

German negation uses two words: 'kein' (no/not a/any) negates nouns and replaces indefinite articles, while 'nicht' (not) negates verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Choosing between them is a foundational grammar rule.
