What is Uniform Motion?

Uniform motion happens when an object travels in a straight line at a constant velocity — equal distances in equal time intervals, with zero acceleration.

Short answer

Uniform motion is straight-line movement at constant speed and direction, so distance is simply d = v·t and acceleration is always zero.

Step-by-step worked examples

A train moves at a constant 25 m/s for 40 s. How far does it travel?

d = v·t
d = 25 × 40 = 1000 m

A conveyor belt carries a box 12 m in 6 s at constant speed. Find the speed.

v = d/t
v = 12/6 = 2 m/s

A drone hovers forward at 4 m/s uniformly. How long to cover 100 m?

t = d/v
t = 100/4 = 25 s

Quick quiz

Q1.A cyclist moves at a constant 6 m/s for 15 s. Distance covered?

Correct answer: B. d = v·t = 6×15 = 90 m.

Q2.In uniform motion, acceleration is…

Correct answer: C. Velocity is constant, so acceleration is zero.

Q3.On a distance–time graph, uniform motion looks like…

Correct answer: B. Constant speed gives a straight line with constant slope.

Q4.Which best describes uniform motion?

Correct answer: B. Uniform motion means constant velocity along a straight path.

Common mistakes

Thinking 'uniform motion' just means 'moving'.Correct: It specifically means constant velocity — same speed, same direction, no acceleration.

Believing a curved distance–time graph can represent uniform motion.Correct: Only a straight line represents uniform motion; a curve means changing speed.

Assuming uniform motion requires zero speed at some point.Correct: Speed stays constant and non-zero throughout — it never slows to zero.

Confusing uniform motion with uniformly accelerated motion.Correct: Uniform motion has zero acceleration; uniformly accelerated motion has constant, non-zero acceleration.

FAQ

What is uniform motion?

Motion along a straight line at constant velocity, with equal distances covered in equal time intervals.

What is the uniform motion formula?

d = v·t, where v is the constant velocity and t is time.

How to calculate distance in uniform motion?

Multiply the constant velocity by the total time travelled: d = v·t.

What are examples of uniform motion?

A train cruising at constant speed on a straight track, or a conveyor belt moving at fixed speed.
