What Are Elements and Chemical Symbols?

An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom — characterized by its atomic number (proton count). Chemical symbols are 1–2 letter abbreviations representing elements, often derived from their Latin or Greek names.

Short answer

Elements are pure substances with a fixed atomic number. Symbols are abbreviations: H for hydrogen, O for oxygen, C for carbon. The first letter is uppercase; second (if any) is lowercase.

Element vs Compound
Element
  • One type of atom
  • Example: O₂ (oxygen gas)
  • Pure substance
  • Cannot decompose further
Compound
  • Two or more elements
  • Example: H₂O (water)
  • Pure substance
  • Can be broken down

Step-by-step worked examples

Helium (He) is element 2. How many protons does a helium atom have?

Element number = atomic number Z.
Helium: Z = 2, so 2 protons.
Neutral He: 2 protons + 2 electrons.

Iron has the symbol Fe and atomic number 26. Why is the symbol not 'Ir'?

Fe comes from the Latin name 'ferrum'.
Many element symbols derive from historical or Latin names, not English.

Write the symbol for: (a) Carbon, (b) Nitrogen, (c) Sulfur.

(a) Carbon = C
(b) Nitrogen = N
(c) Sulfur = S (not 'Su' — symbols are 1–2 letters, standardized)

Quick quiz

Q1.Which is a chemical symbol for an element?

Correct answer: B. H is the symbol for hydrogen (an element). H₂O, NaCl, O₂ are molecules/compounds.

Q2.Gold has the symbol Au. Where does this come from?

Correct answer: B. Au comes from the Latin name 'aurum' for gold.

Q3.Sodium's symbol is Na. What is it NOT based on?

Correct answer: A. Na comes from Latin 'natrium', not English 'sodium'.

Q4.How many letters can an element symbol have?

Correct answer: C. Symbols are 1–2 letters: C, Cl, Au, Uuu (recently named elements).

Common mistakes

An element can be a mixture of atoms.Correct: An element is a pure substance with only one type of atom.

All element symbols come from English names.Correct: Many derive from Latin, Greek, or historical origins (Fe from ferrum, Au from aurum).

O and O₂ are different elements.Correct: O is an atom; O₂ is a molecule (two oxygen atoms bonded). Both are the element oxygen.

Compound and element are the same thing.Correct: Elements have one type of atom; compounds have two or more types chemically bonded.

FAQ

What is a chemical symbol?

A 1–2 letter abbreviation for an element (uppercase first, lowercase second if present).

Why do some symbols not match the English name?

Many elements were named in Latin or Greek; symbols reflect historical origin (Fe=ferrum, Hg=hydrargyrum).

Are there 118 or 92 elements?

118 known elements total: 92 naturally occurring, 26 artificially synthesized in labs.

What is the difference between an atom and an element?

An atom is a single particle; an element is a substance made of one type of atom.
