How to Use Don't and Doesn't?

Negation (saying 'no' or 'not') in present tense uses don't and doesn't. Like question formation, the auxiliary do/does moves to negative form. The pattern is simple: I/you/we/they + don't; he/she/it + doesn't.

Short answer

Use 'don't' with I/you/we/they (I don't like it) and 'doesn't' with he/she/it (She doesn't like it) to negate present tense verbs. Both mean 'do not' and 'does not' respectively.

Negation: Don't vs. Doesn't
  1. 1
    I / You / We / They
    Use don't: I don't like pizza.
  2. 2
    He / She / It
Use doesn't: She doesn't like pizza.
  3. 3
    Negative contraction
    do not = don't; does not = doesn't

FAQ

How to negate in present tense?

Use don't (I/you/we/they) or doesn't (he/she/it): I don't work, she doesn't work.

What's the rule for don't vs. doesn't?

Don't with plural/informal; doesn't with third singular. Same pattern as have/has.

Can I say 'I does not like'?

No. Use don't for I: 'I don't like it' (not I doesn't, I does not, or I not like).

Is 'doesn't' the same as 'does not'?

Yes — doesn't is the contraction. Both mean exactly the same.
