What is Reported Speech with Tense Agreement?

Reported speech is a way to describe what someone said without using their exact words — by shifting tenses backward in time. When you report a past statement, verbs typically backshift one tense level: present → past, past → past perfect. This keeps the indirect claim logically connected to the time it was reported.

Short answer

Reported speech converts direct quotes to indirect form with automatic tense backshift. 'I love it' → 'She said she loved it': present tense shifts to past tense one level back.

  • Past perfect: 'He said he had gone home'
  • Past perfect: 'He said he had seen it'
  • Conditional: 'He said he would come'

FAQ

What is reported speech?

A way of describing what someone said indirectly, converting direct quotes to indirect statements with automatic tense backshift.

Why does tense shift in reported speech?

Because the statement is being reported from a later time perspective, so the verb moves one tense back to reflect that time distance.

What is the rule for tense backshift in reported speech?

Present → past, past → past perfect, present perfect → past perfect, future → conditional (would). Does not apply to universal truths.

Do pronouns change in reported speech?

Yes. 'I' becomes 'he/she,' 'you' becomes 'I,' 'my' becomes 'his/her.' Context determines the correct pronoun.
