What is Nominalization?

Nominalization is the grammatical process of converting verbs into abstract nouns, transforming actions and states into concepts. In French, common suffixes like -tion, -ance, -ment, and -age achieve this transformation, creating formal and precise language.

Short answer

Nominalization converts a verb into a noun using derivational suffixes (créer → création, habiter → habitation, marcher → marche). It transforms actions into abstract concepts and strengthens formal writing.

Original Verbs
  • créer (to create)
  • habiter (to inhabit)
  • manger (to eat)
  • diminuer (to diminish)
  • agir (to act)
Nominalizations
  • création (creation)
  • habitation (habitation)
  • repas (meal) / mangement (eating)

Common mistakes

Adding wrong suffix: créer → créement instead of création.Correct: Créer + -tion = création (not -ment, which doesn't attach to this verb).

Ignoring stem changes: porter → portement (should be portage or port).Correct: Some verbs have irregular nominalizations; learn common ones (boire → boisson, not 'boirement').

Using the infinitive instead of nominalization: 'Je aime habiter' instead of 'J'aime l'habitation'.Correct: Nominalization creates abstract nouns for formal writing; distinguishes between action (infinitive) and concept (noun).

Forgetting that nominalization changes gender: le développement (masc.).Correct: Track gender: création (fem.), développement (masc.). Gender varies by suffix and root.

FAQ

Why use nominalization instead of verbs?

Nominalizations create formal, abstract, and concise statements. 'La création de l'art' (the creation of art) is more formal than 'créer l'art' (to create art).

What are the main nominalization suffixes in French?

-tion (créer → création), -ment (développer → développement), -ance/-ence (tolérer → tolérance), -age (marier → mariage), -ure (couvrir → couverture).

Can every verb be nominalized?

Most can, but not all naturally. Some are irregular: boire → boisson (not 'boimentation'). Learn common nominalizations.

Does nominalization change the word's gender?

Yes. Développement (masc.), création (fem.). Gender depends on the suffix and root; check a dictionary.
