How to Form French Adverbs from Adjectives?

French adverbs are formed primarily by adding the suffix -ment to the feminine form of an adjective. However, there are exceptions and irregulars that make adverb formation more complex. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs and are essential for expressing how, when, where, and why.

Short answer

French adverbs are formed by adding -ment to the feminine form of an adjective: rapide (fast) → rapidement (rapidly), heureux (happy) → heureusement (happily). Some adverbs are irregular and must be memorized (bien, mal, vite).

Adverb Formation: From Adjective to -ment

    Add -ment suffix
lente + ment = lentement, joyeuse + ment = joyeusement, complète + ment = complètement
  4. 4
    Result: Adverb
Adverb modifies verb: 'Il marche lentement.' (He walks slowly.)
