How Are French Plurals Formed?

Plural formation in French follows systematic rules based on a noun's ending. Most nouns simply add the letter -s, but nouns ending in -au, -eau, -eux, and some -al have special patterns and change to -aux.

Short answer

Most French nouns form the plural by adding -s to the singular form. Nouns ending in -au, -eau, -eux, and certain -al words change to -aux.

FAQ

What is the basic rule for French plural formation?

Most nouns add -s to the singular. Exceptions: -au/-eau/-eux add -x; -al becomes -aux; -s/-x/-z don't change.

How are French plurals pronounced?

In most cases, the plural sounds the same as the singular because the -s and -x endings are silent.

Do all -al nouns become -aux?

Most do, but a few like 'bal' and 'festival' follow the regular -s rule: bals, festivals.

What about compound nouns?

Compound nouns can be complex; typically only the main noun is pluralized, depending on the noun-noun or adjective-noun combo.
