What is Present Conditional?

The present conditional (conditionnel présent) expresses actions that would happen under certain conditions or circumstances. It is used for polite requests, advice, hypothetical situations, and predictions based on conditions. The conditional stem is identical to the futur simple stem, but with imparfait endings.

Short answer

The present conditional expresses actions that would occur if a condition were met. It is formed by adding -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient to the futur simple stem.

Conditional vs. Future Stems
Futur Simple
  • Infinitive + future endings
  • Example: parlerai
  • Definite future action
Present Conditional
  • Same stem as futur simple + imparfait endings
  • Example: parlerais
  • Hypothetical or conditional action
